How does electric bell work – With an interesting video

An electric bell is a device that produces an announcement sound with a bell. Electric bells are often attached to the door switch of the house or attached to the coffee shop so that customers can easily call the waiter. The electric bell has a simple structure. It includes Bell, Electromagnet, Switch, Battery, Clapper and Coil. Today’s article, we will learn about how does electric bell work?

What is an electromagnet?

To understand how electric bells work, We will first learn how to make an electromagnet. An electromagnet is a device that, when energized, generates a magnetic field large enough to attract iron-based objects. The figure below shows a simple construction of an electromagnet.

Electromagnets aren’t all that complicated; you can construct a simple one using materials you probably have lying around the house. A conductive wire, usually insulated copper, is wound around a metal rod. The wire will get hot to the touch, which why insulation is necessary. The rod on which the wire is wrapped is called a solenoid. The magnetic field radiates away from this point.

The strength of the magnet is directly related to the number of times the wire coils around the rod. For a stronger magnetic field, the wire should be more tightly wrapped.

How does electric bell work?

An Electric Bell consists of a Bell, an Electromagnet, Switch, Battery, Clapper, and a Coil. The figure below is the basic structure of an electric bell.

When the switch closes and current flows from the battery to the electromagnet. And the electromagnet creates a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts the clapper. As a result, the metal ball hits the bell, so we hear the sound.

Now, this movement of the clapper also leads to the opening of the electrical contacts. This interrupts the current to the electromagnet and causes the collapse of the magnetic field. Make the metal ball move away from the bell.

Now, this movement of the arm leads to the closing of the electrical contacts. Thus, the cycle begins to repeat itself. As it repeats rapidly, we hear a constant ringing. This is how does electric bell work.
